Re-post: Procrastination

From 11/19/10:

Procrastination can be so ugly. I think it’s because there’s this little bit of ego in it. The part that thinks you can get something done, no matter when you do it. The part that scoffs at expressions like “there’s no time like the present” & “it’s now or never.” The part that thinks every opportunity you have now will be right there waiting for you tomorrow. The part that is so wrapped up in you, it loses grip of reality.

Reality check:

  1. Time moves on with or w/out you.
  2. Opportunities will pass by.
  3. Chances will be missed.

Waiting is a trap. And a procrastinator is a mouse.

But us procrastinators? See, we don’t see it that way. We think the world is in the palm of our hands & every opportunity is at our fingertips. We think we’re young, no matter how many birthdays we have. We think we can get it done, no matter when we do it. Procrastinators make the competition so much easier. We notice everyone who passes by & we say we’ll catch up later. We’re delusional. We’re human. We’re normal. We’re the majority. We’re not guaranteed to succeed at anything. The fact of the matter is that most of the time, we get the job done… not always on time, but it always gets done.

I really don’t want to sleep & fart my way through life. I hope I don’t wake up one day when I’m 48 & realize that I’m still single with 7 cats and know all the words to every Miley Cyrus song there ever was. I am going to grab life by the horns. I am going to stop procrastinating. Tomorrow.
